Very Good: Spiritual Exercises for Genesis 1

This entry is part [part not set] of 1 in the series true you

On Sunday mornings at Highland, we’re exploring 16 texts in Scripture that summarize the story of the Bible (based on a book by Chris Bruno). The series is called “The True You.”

This Sunday (4/29) we’re looking at Gen. 1:26-27 and Gen. 1:31.

Here are some spiritual exercises that can help you make this part of God’s Story your story:

  1. Adapted Lectio Divina (“divine reading”): during 4-5 days this week, take 1 of these 2 texts (Gen. 1:26-27 or Gen. 1:31 and
    1. Read – read it slowly, repeatedly, prayerfully,
    2. Reflect – notice what word or phrase catches your attention; consider what God may be trying to say to you through that word or phrase,
    3. Respond – talk to God about what you are hearing through that text,
    4. Rest – sit in stillness and contentment.
  2. Adapted Examen: during 4-5 days this week, write down 2-3 things each day that God did/ provided that were “very good.”
  3. Post a picture on social media for 4-5 days this week of something that is “very good” and use the hashtag #verygood.
  4. During 4-5 days this week do 1 thing each day for a person that treats them in a way that says “you are made by God and are very good.”
  5. Community Questions (find a friend, small group, spiritual companion or spiritual director and have them ask you these questions):
    1. What story/stories about yourself did you learn from your family?
    2. How was that story/ were those stories different than/ similar to what you learn in Gen. 1–you are made by God and are very good?
    3. Over the past week/month, how have you experienced God’s affirmation of you as “very good”?
