There’s a lot more that goes on in someone’s work that you might guess.

Take preaching.

Last week my colleague Eric was rudely attacked by a rogue wasp while he was preaching in the late service. Repeatedly the wasp came at him. Like a miniature jet fighter honing in on a target it aimed for his face as he preached away. He had to swat and preach, swat and preach. I wasn’t present, but I watched the video. It was the most heroic preaching effort I’ve ever seen. Finally, Wasim Khokhar, longtime Highland member, killed the wasp, and laid it at Eric’s feet.

Sometimes there’s a lot more that goes on in someone’s work than you might have ever guessed.Read More »Front Page: Why Work Matters (Est. 2:19) Chris Altrock – Oct. 16, 2016

A Second Look at Heaven

I just finished reading a book by Fredrik Backman entitled A Man Called Ove. The main character, Ove, was married to a beautiful and caring woman named Sophie. While the couple was vacationing in Spain a drunk driver caused an accident involving the couple. The accident took their unborn child and Sophie’s legs. Four years later Sophie died of cancer. The book opens with Ove trying to end his own life. Why? Because he desperately wants to be with Sophie, his wife, in heaven.Read More »Winners & Losers: The Singing Revolution (Rev. 4-5) Chris Altrock – July 24, 2016

Music Past

We moved to Memphis twice. Some of you moved from somewhere else to Memphis once. We moved to Memphis twice. And not only did we move to Memphis twice. We moved to Memphis twice from the exact same city. Twice we moved to Memphis, TN from Las Cruces, NM. Once as a student to attend school at Harding School of Theology. Once as a preacher to begin working at Highland.

The first time we moved to Memphis Kendra’s parents helped us move. The second day after we arrived, with our tiny apartment at Harding School of Theology filled with boxes yet to be unpacked, Kendra’s mom said, “Come on, let’s go!” And we all went and spent the day at Graceland. Kendra’s mother is a huge Elvis fan. So we spent our second day in Memphis not unpacking boxes but touring the home of Elvis Presley. I think that’s why she volunteered to move us to Memphis! It was an excuse to get close to Graceland.Read More »Ticket for Two: Present and Past (John 14:25-26; 16:12-15) Chris Altrock – April 10, 2016

Idle: The Greatest Gift You May Have Never Received (Matt. 11:28-30) Chris Altrock – February 21, 2016

When Normal is Abnormal

I played football in high school–running back. I know, based on my impressive size, that’s probably not surprising. My twin brother, whose body is a mirror of mine, was a lineman. Needless to say, we two puny players didn’t strike a lot of fear in the hearts of our opponents.

One of my strongest memories of football is how hard practices were. Our coaches believed in running hard. If one player did anything wrong in practice, the entire team was called to the goal line and we had to run sprints. If, while running sprints, the coaches deemed that a player was not running all out, the entire team had to run more sprints.

And to make matters worse, while our coaches did believe in running they didn’t believe in rehydration. No drinking of water was allowed at practices. If you had to drink water something was wrong with you.Read More »Idle: The Greatest Gift You May Have Never Received (Matt. 11:28-30) Chris Altrock – February 21, 2016
