Bees

There’s a lot more that goes on in someone’s work that you might guess.

Take preaching.

Last week my colleague Eric was rudely attacked by a rogue wasp while he was preaching in the late service. Repeatedly the wasp came at him. Like a miniature jet fighter honing in on a target it aimed for his face as he preached away. He had to swat and preach, swat and preach. I wasn’t present, but I watched the video. It was the most heroic preaching effort I’ve ever seen. Finally, Wasim Khokhar, longtime Highland member, killed the wasp, and laid it at Eric’s feet.

Sometimes there’s a lot more that goes on in someone’s work than you might have ever guessed.Read More »Front Page: Why Work Matters (Est. 2:19) Chris Altrock – Oct. 16, 2016

Disenchanted Faith

Theologian Richard Beck argues that Scooby Doo may be the perfect cartoon for summarizing what life is like for a person of faith these days.[1] I used to watch Scooby Doo when I was up early getting ready for our 6 AM junior high basketball practice. Most episodes unfolded the same way. Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, Velma and Scooby Doo either stumbled into or were called into a mystery. Some ghost, monster or supernatural creature was causing chaos. The kids and the dog investigated. And, after getting the daylights scared out of them, they finally figured out that the creature wasn’t a spook. It was a human pretending to be a creature in order to scare people away from his or her criminal hijinks. Once the gang realized this, the authorities were called in and the person was arrested. And the criminal almost always lamented in the end, “And I would have gotten away with it, if it hadn’t been for those meddling kids!” What started seemingly as an instance of supernatural activity was unmasked and turned out to be an instance of human criminal activity.Read More »When God Hides: The Obligation of Celebration (Esther 9-10) Chris Altrock – July 10, 2016

The Name We Wear

Tomorrow, July 4, is a day that, in part, reminds us who we are. We may be fans of the Tigers or the Titans. We may be of Millington or Memphis. We may be Church of Christ or Church of God in Christ. We may have family trees with roots in Poland or Peru. We may have grown up in the United States or have moved here from another country. But tomorrow, Independence Day, reminds us that there is something that supercedes all of those differences. Tomorrow reminds us that we are Americans. We are not just Tennesseans or Texans New Mexicans. We are not just Republicans or Democrats or Independents. We are Americans.Read More »When God Hides: The Day She Changed Her Name (Esther 6-8) Chris Altrock – July 3, 2016

Turning Points in the Air

The BBC once ran an occasional series called “Turning Points.” This series highlighted key moments when the storyline of history turned in a significant way. Here’s their infographic on turning points in aviation. I’ll highlight a few of the times in history when manned flight pivoted in a powerful way:[1]

  • 1903 The first heavier than air aircraft
  • 1919 The world’s first non-stop flight across the Atlantic
  • 1939 First flight by a jet aircraft
  • 1947 First supersonic flight
  • 1958 First commercially successful jet airliner
  • 1968 First supersonic airliner
  • 1988 B-2 Stealth bomber enters service
  • 1995 World’s first hunter killer unmanned aircraft

Every story in history has a turning point, a fulcrum, on which important things pivot.Read More »The Fulcrum of Finances (Esther 3-4) Chris Altrock – June 12, 2016
