Adele Calhoun writes about 62 spiritual disciplines in her book Spiritual Disciplines Handbook.
Disciplines #1 – #6 relate to the general idea of WORSHIP.
Here’s discipline #3 – Holy Communion.
The focus of holy communion is to be “nourished by Christ, tasting the sweep depths of redemption.” Through the eating of a meal of bread and wine (or grape juice) (see Mk. 14:22-24; 1 Cor. 11:26; Acts 2:46-47; 1 Cor. 10:17) we “join ourselves to Christ and feed on him in our hearts through faith.”
Communion is a sacrament: “an outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible reality.” As such, it brings us into deeper unity and communion with Jesus.
By eating the sacrament of communion, we can expect the following “fruit” to grow in our lives: keeping company with Jesus no matter what happens; having nourishment for the journey; developing a deeper love for Jesus; a growing awareness of your own spiritual poverty; more fully appreciating Jesus’ sacrificial love to rescue you; appreciating the diversity of other believers who take the Lord’s Supper with you; and having a passion for unity of the church worldwide.
