Adele Calhoun writes about 62 spiritual disciplines in her book Spiritual Disciplines Handbook.
Disciplines #1 – #6 relate to the general idea of WORSHIP.
Here’s discipline #1 – Celebration. At its heart the discipline involves “Identifying and pursuing those things that bring the heart deep gladness and reveling in them before the Lord.” (See Zeph. 3:17; Ps. 16:7,9,11; Ps. 47:1; Ps. 139:14; Lam. 3:20-24).
How do you practice this discipline? Take a few moments to recall God’s gifts, provisions, guidance and love toward you and then write a song, or make a collage, or write a poem, or play music, or memorize a verse that communicates you gratitude to God for those things; OR identify some people in your life with whom you might celebrate something (e.g., their birthday, something special in their life).
Who is this discipline for? When is a prime time to pursue this discipline? If you are striving to become free from “the addiction to criticism or negativity,” or trying to cultivate a “spirit of gladness” or hoping to live “from a mentality of abundance rather than of scarcity,” then this discipline is for you.
Take some time this week to celebrate before the Lord!
