Yesterday we ate breakfast at Grand Central Station. It is a very different place on the weekend-full of tourists and empty of people trying to get to work. Then we took the subway to the port where we waited two hours to board a ferry to Liberty Island. The woman in front of us in had moved to NYC when she was 19 to do modeling. After three successful years she moved away. Yesterday was her first time back–now with her own 21 year old daughter. It was a very cold day. Windy and in the 30’s. The Statue of Liberty was breath taking and more impressive than I might have imagined.
We took the subway up to Brooklyn Bridge and then walked into China Town, almost getting lost when we stumbled freezing and weary into Little Italy. By chance we took cover in a very small Italian restaurant which turned out to be very popular and very good. We got back on the subway and took it to Times Square where we took in a movie (to get out of the cold) and saw Mary Poppins– a great Broadway play. By the time we got in bed it was 11:45 PM. It was a long, cold, but thrilling day.
