This post is part of a 40-day journey following Jesus in his prayer life. We’ll explore virtually every reference in the Gospels to Jesus and prayer. For a more in-depth treatment, see my book Prayers from the Pit.
“’Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.’ Peter said to him, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.’ Jesus said, ‘I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me’” (Luke 22:31-34 ESV).
One of the few to whom Jesus turns for companionship is about to turn his back on Jesus. Yet rather than curse him, Jesus comforts him. Instead of saying, “Simon, I’m coming for you!” Jesus says, “Simon, I’m praying for you.” He prays that Peter’s “faith may not fail.” Jesus spends some of his final moments praying for the faith of one who won’t even have the courage to admit that he is a follower of Jesus.
Has your faith ever failed? Has your courage ever waned? Know that Jesus is praying for you. He wants your faith to be fueled. He wants your courage to overflow. He is praying for you. Take comfort in this.
And practice for others what Jesus practices for you. Are there some who are difficult or disappointing in your life? Add them to your prayer list. Pray for them as Jesus prays for you.
