Jesus v Religion (3): The Conflict Over Authority

temple

This summer I’m preaching through the ten conflicts which Mark records between Jesus and religious leaders:

Ten Conflicts Between Jesus and Religious Leaders

Source of Conflict Text
Forgiveness Mark. 2:1-12
Call Mk. 2:13-17
Fasting Mk. 2:18-22
Sabbath (1) Mk. 2:23-28
Sabbath (2) Mk. 3:1-6
Authority Mk. 11:27-23
Money Mk. 12:13-17
Resurrection Mk. 12:18-27
Law Mk. 12:28-34
Lord Mk. 12:35-40

This week I’m meditating on the conflict regarding authority in Mark 11:27-33:

27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32But shall we say, ‘From man’?”— they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. 33So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

What do you hear from this text?  What most strikes you regarding this conflict?  Why is religion so interested in authority?
