The Truth About Life: Cloudy Forecast (Rev. 1:4-8) Chris Altrock – 6/7/15

20150510- Series Title

A British scholar recently interviewed 1,000 young women between the ages of 13 and 20. [i]  She summarizes the result of those surveys with one word. Do you know what that word is? What one word describes young women in the U. S. and the U.K? It’s the word “anxious.”

The scholar, Noreena Hertz, says that this generation of young women has grown up with social media, recession and global conflict. They have followed the exploits of Edward Snowden, watched parents lose jobs, and seen the violence of Isis. And, as a result, she concludes, “This generation is profoundly anxious.” Read More »The Truth About Life: Cloudy Forecast (Rev. 1:4-8) Chris Altrock – 6/7/15

And when evening came…he was alone on the land (Mk. 6:47 ESV).” This is how Mark describes Jesus near the end of Chapter 6.  It’s been a tough chapter.  Jesus gave the sermon in his hometown and all anyone could do was criticize the preacher and his message.  Can you imagine that?  Jesus comes to Highland and preaches and all we can do is nitpick the sermon while we’re at lunch.  That’s what happened at the beginning of this chapter.  Then, Jesus’ cousin John the Baptist was arrested, imprisoned and executed. There are few people who were closer to Jesus than John.  And now John is killed.  Such injustice!  And while trying to find a quiet spot for his road-weary apostles to rest, thousands of people crowd around Jesus, clamoring for help.  It’s been a pretty tough chapter.Read More »Follow: Take Heart (Mark 6) June 9, 2013 – Sunday Morning Message

Ricky Gervais is a well-known comedian. Raised as a Christian, he is now an atheist. A couple of years ago, in an interview, Gervais shared how his journey from faith to faithlessness began. He said, “I used to believe in God. The Christian one that is. I loved Jesus. He was my hero…I went to church and believed in God.” One day at the kitchen table, Gervais was drawing a picture of Jesus. His older brother Bob, 19, walked into the kitchen. And Bob asked his mom a question: “Why do you believe in God?” Bob didn’t mean anything bad by the question. He just honestly wanted to know. Were there good reasons for believing in God? Why should he believe in God? Their mother, however, responded negatively. “Bob,” she said, “shut up.” And Gervais, the younger brother whose hero was Jesus and who believed in God, was shaken by the exchange. Did Bob or their mother know something he didn’t? Maybe there was no God. Maybe there were no good reasons for believing in God. And that mini-crisis of faith began a journey that led Gervais away from faith.Read More »Fault Lines: The Fault Line of Being Doubtless (1 Cor. 13, 15) January 13, 2013 – Sunday Morning Message

Doubt: When the Pain of Faith is Too Great (John 20:1-18)

During the French Revolution people were being executed every day. Three men were waiting for their death sentences to be carried out.[1] The first one was a priest. As he was brought to the guillotine, he was asked, “Do you have any last words?”  The priest said, “I believe God is going to save me.” He put his head underneath the blade, the blade came down, but then it stopped two inches from his neck. The executioner said, “This is a miracle,” and they let him go. The next man came up. Like the first, he was a priest. The executioner asked him, “Do you have any last words?” The second priest replied, “I believe God is going to save me.”  He put his head underneath the blade.  The blade came down, but then it stopped two inches from his neck.  They said, “This is a miracle,” and they let him go. The third man came up. He was a skeptic. He was a doubter.  The executioner asked him, “Do you have any last words?” Looking at the guillotine, he said, “Well, I think I see your problem.  There’s something jammed in the gear mechanism.”Read More »Doubt: When the Pain of Faith is Too Great (John 20:1-18)
