The Fire of a Flock

What brings you comfort? What makes you happy?

For a woman named Ventiko, it’s a peacock.

That’s right, a peacock.[1]

Perhaps you caught Ventiko’s story a few weeks ago. She is a photographer and performance artist in New York. She recently tried to board a flight in Newark with her peacock Dexter, claiming that the peacock was her emotional-support animal. She bought Dexter a ticket. She paid money for the peacock to sit next to her on the flight–because it’s her comfort animal. He makes her happy when she’s sad. He brings her comfort when she’s anxious.Read More »Warmer: The Warmth of One (Acts 16) Chris Altrock – 2/11/18

Surrounded by the Hurting

Fast food restaurant Chik Fil A produced this video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v0RhvZ3lvY as part of their training for their employees. It’s theme is simple: “Every life has a story.” Not all of those stories are filled with happiness. Some are filled with hurt.

In a way that was the theme of last Sunday’s message from Acts 5. We witnessed how the early church realized a truth illustrated in this video: We are surrounded by hurting people in need of healing. In Acts 5 we saw a church that recognized this. They made a warm and welcoming place for the hurting. And people thus flocked to the church.Read More »Warmer: Following Directions (Acts 8:26-40) Chris Altrock – 1/28/18

People in Pain

Last Sunday Eric told you a story about waiting to eat enchiladas while he was in Texas. He made a big point out of the fact that he was eating enchiladas in Texas, as if Texas is the place where you get really good Mexican food.

Now, I’ll admit you can get some decent Mexican food in Texas. But the reason I was gone last Sunday is that I was in New Mexico at a family event. My youngest step-sister was getting married. And New Mexico is where you go if you want to eat really good Mexican food. While I was there, I had a green chili cheeseburger and a green chili quesadilla–with chili from Hatch, New Mexico. I had chile verde gorditas. I had posole. It was really good Mexican food!Read More »Warmer: Heating Through Healing (Acts 5:12-16) Chris Altrock – 1/21/18

Over Our Heads: Accept One Another (Rom. 15:7) Chris Altrock – Sept. 3, 2017

All the Same

Last year at about this time of year I spoke at a retreat of church leaders up in the northeast. We were studying the gospel together. When I say “gospel” I mean what the Bible means–the story of Jesus and the significance of his birth, life, death, resurrection and return. This was core stuff we were plowing through together.

In the midst of our study, one of those church leaders stopped me and started debating my Bible translation. I was using the ESV. Others in our group had the NIV. But he had the KJV. In the midst of our study of the gospel, this church leader launched into an argument about why the Bible translations the rest of us were using were flawed and why the church must use the translation he was using. Everyone in the church, he demanded, must not only believe the gospel. Everyone must also read from the KJV.Read More »Over Our Heads: Accept One Another (Rom. 15:7) Chris Altrock – Sept. 3, 2017
